Aizkraukle Mire and Forests is an hour’s drive from Riga by the new Tinuzi-Koknese highway (P80, E22). Aizkraukle Mire started to form about 8000-9000 years ago, the thickness of the peat layer reaches 7.9 m. The oldest information about Aizkraukle Mire can be found in the 17th century at Swedish time maps. At the beginning of the 20th century, the bog was much wider and more open, and the mineral island names of the bog have been renowned since ancient times – Lime Island, Cowberry Island, Ox Island, Long Island. During the hike you will be able to see the world of moss, small pine trees, deep pools, tiny dark lakes, mineral islands with ancient broad-leaved forests and smell wild rosemary. If you are lucky, you will hear cranes further away and, if you look closely, you will see the the carnivorous plant of sundew.
The trail is not marked in nature and is not intended for walking without a “Bog-shoeing” guide.
Trekking boots with waterproof membrane or rubber boots are required.
Features and amenities
Moderately difficult hikes will be suitable for active participants with hiking experience. For beginners, older people and children up to 10 years old this route is usually tiring. There will be obstacles in the area, such as fallen trees or wrecks, places to cross ditches or streams. The route is usually 7-10 km long.

Bog shoeing trip can be varied with the length of the route and the duration of the hike from 3 hours up to the whole day.
What to bring
You should wear comfortable clothes and footwear. Take swimwear and camera with you. And don`t forget high spirits!
