Bog-shoe Hiking Tour at Vasenieki mire

Booking: info@purvubrideji.lv

Overview

Vasenieki mire is 2 hours drive from Riga and only 30 minutes drive from Ventspils. Vasenieki mire is a moss or raised bog. This is the name given to this type of swamp due to the domed shape of the swamp as it develops. The dome is formed by sphagnum moss, which pile up in the central part of the bog and accumulates water. Vasenieki mire is located in the Stiklu Mire Complex, which is the largest in Western Latvia and formed 5-7 thousand years ago. During the hike you will be able to see the world of moss, small pine trees, deep pools, tiny dark lakes and smell wild rosemary. Most trees are not able to endure the harsh conditions; therefore, there are only a few surviving species, like pine and birch; and the trees do not mature as they do in the forest.
There is a picnic area with benches and a campfire site near the bog. On request we can provide a large soup pot and hammocks for a relaxing stay. Also there is a birdwatching tower along the way.The trail is not marked in nature and is not intended for walking without a “Bog-shoeing” guide.

Trekking boots with waterproof membrane or rubber boots are required.
